AIC's DeWalt Scroll Saw

Here at the Ashland Innovation Center, there are many useful and fun tools. One of these is the DeWalt Scroll Saw. The DeWalt Scroll Saw is used to cut cardboard and wood, as well as other materials. Though the scroll saw can be hard to use, if you understand how it works, there many wonderful thing you can do with it. This post will teach how to use this tool and what you can do with it.

The rules to the Scroll Saw are not too difficult to learn.

  • Press the button on top of the arm to turn it on.
  • Make sure you are wearing safety goggles and there is nothing loose hanging in front of the machine while doing so, as that would be dangerous.
  • While on, the  blade of the Scroll Saw will move up and down behind the guard. Make sure the guard is high enough up that what you want cut will fit below it, but not too high so that other things could slip under and touch the blade. The guard is adjusted with a knob on the front left of the arm.
  • The tautness of the Scroll Saw's blade can be adjusted as well using the dial on the front. Setting one is the loosest and five is the tightest. The blade should be stored on a looser setting, but used on a higher setting.
  • The speed of the saw can also be adjusted using a dial on top of the saw. It is easier to maneuver items around the blade when it is on a slower speed, but a faster speed is needed to cut through tougher objects like thick wood.
  • The platform of the saw can be tilted to cut at an angle too. This is done by using the knob under the saw platform to loosen the platform, then tilting the platform and tightening the knob again.
  • While cutting, make sure that the blade of the scroll saw is facing in the direction you want to cut. As the blade of the saw does not move, you will have to turn the wood if you want to have a curve in your design.

The Dewalt Scroll Saw can be used for many different things. Cardboard can be cut with precision with the saw, as it is not too thick. Remember to draw out what you want to cut first, so that you can trace your design with the DeWalt Scroll Saw. You can also cut wood with a fair amount of precision, though it is less precise than cutting cardboard. You can cut out letters and attach them to a wooden base so that you can make a wood or cardboard sign of your name, or any other word. In conjunction with some other tools, people can make model houses and vehicles. Whatever is being made, the scroll saw is a useful tool, and it is important to know how to use it.
