About AIC

The Ashland Innovation Center was a spark of the imagination in 2016 and came to life in 2017. With the help of administrators, students, kind donations and the dedication of our teachers, the AIC has launched and is currently full of activity.

Upcoming Events

Throughout the 2017-18 school year, the AIC will be host to after school programs for Ashland Middle School and the Mindess Elementary School. These programs run in five week cycles, almost every Monday and Tuesday of the school year. Check back for registration opportunities.

Workshops - We plan to host a small number of workshops later this school year. These will be open to the public with limited space.

The Leaders

Chad McGowan is an AHS Computer Science teacher. He has worked in Ashland since 1999 and started the Student Technology Assist Team in 2013. Since then, Chad has worked diligently to change the curriculum of his courses to support more computer science, bringing in nationally recognized programs as well as developing his own curriculums. He has poured hours of his life, summer included, into bringing the AIC into being. Email at cmcgowan@ashland.k12.ma.us.

Terri Henry is a long time Ashland teacher who has worked with students at almost all grade levels. She joined the AHS community this year as our STEAM teacher. Ms. Henry shares computer science duties with Mr. McGowan, as well as teaching Robotics and Engineering the Future. While she was not in the high school when the project launched, she was on the initial team of designers for the project. She jumped at the opportunity to help bring the space to life by becoming part of the high school team for the 2017-18 school year.

Leah Marshquist is one of the two full time art teachers at Ashland High School. Leah's enthusiasm for creativity and making are a natural part of her job and she proudly brings those passions to the AIC as part of the after school team. Leah also has served as part of the committee that helped develop and shape the vision for the AIC.

The Makerspace Mentors is a group of students who started as volunteers to help create the AIC vision and quickly evolved into our after school volunteers who run programs for the middle and elementary schools in Ashland. What started as a pilot idea (see this post), has turned into a full year program hosted at the AIC every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The mentors range in age from 9th to 12th grade and have various backgrounds and interests, most importantly including Making!!

The Makerspace Committee was formed starting at the beginning of the 2016. Mr. McGowan, along with the help of Ms. Lauren Carreiro (AHS Dean) began putting together a team of teachers and administrators that could help bring a vision together for what the AIC would be. Together they held meetings,  found grants, launched pilots, and brought students into the program. Without this team, this project would have been very difficult to put together.
